During tough times most businesses believe that they need to get grabby and get as much as they can for themselves. The best way to function during a tight economic time is to make sure that you give other businesses in your community as much business as you can. The better and more economically stable that your community is the better off your business will be as well. Having a successful business in a starving community will only last for so long. You need the support of your community to help your business grow and flourish.

One sure way to help not only your own business grow but to help your entire community get on better footing is by congregating the local, small business owners and creating a cohesive group to provide support and suggestions to each other. This type of small business brainstorming will not only help you reach other business owners in your community to tell them about your business but will also help allow the local business owners to begin to understand each other as individual business owners and to also find out what each local business has to offer.

Using the community you live in to help you generate more business not only for yourself but for your entire community is the one way in which we can all ride out the current economic crisis.

Whenever you are running a business promoting from within can be difficult.

Employees who are within the structure of your business tend to be those who know and understand it really well but sometimes it can create struggles when one person is chosen above another for a management position, especially if that person has been with the company a good long time. Promoting from within can be both a good and a difficult thing at best.

In most cases they don't do this because they are looking to get promoted but simply because they want to gain understanding and knowledge about what they do and what the company they work for does. Of course, their counterparts tend to be employees who are there simply to draw a paycheck and are more than happy to remain oblivious to the inner workings of the company.

From a company standpoint it is almost always better to hire a qualified employee from within the company than from outside the company. Simply put an employee who has already demonstrated their ability and willingness to work, one who fits your company, who already understands at least some of the inner workings of the company can very easily be groomed to be a manager.

There will be an adjustment period when you raise one employee up above the others and there may be some hard feelings but what most companies find is that if they select the right employee and one that works well with others things will usually begin to straighten out and tensions drop within the first few weeks. From there on a good, new manager will work to bring everyone onto the team into the fold and create a cohesive and pleasant working environment for all parties.

Some companies prefer to hire outside individuals to come into their business to fill management positions but this method of hiring is not without its growing pains either. Most new managers will meet with some resistance from their co-workers, however, this is just part of the growing pains of a company and is something that usually spontaneously resolves on its own.
